How do italic Unicode characters work?
Unicode includes special italic characters in the Mathematical Alphanumeric Symbols block (U+1D400–U+1D7FF). These look like italic letters but are individual characters, not formatting. They display as italic regardless of the platform's text formatting support.
Can I use italic text on Instagram?
Yes. Since these are Unicode characters and not formatting, they display as italic in Instagram bios, captions, and comments — as well as on Twitter/X, Discord, Facebook, WhatsApp, and most other platforms.
Why doesn't every character convert?
Unicode italic characters only exist for A–Z and a–z Latin letters. Numbers, punctuation, and characters from other scripts don't have italic Unicode variants, so they are left unchanged.
